Description

Flag with blue field. At center is image of eagle perched over a white shield with arrows, spears, and U.S. flags on either side. Below in white are numbers "1896," and around is a gold circular border. On white shield is image of skep beehive and sego lillies with "Industry" above in blue and "Utah 1847" below. On heading are two metal grommets and the words "Official Utah State Flag Centennial Edition as per HCR 2 (2011) First One Hundred Flags Produced." Tag beneath that reads "3 FT x 5 FT 100% Nylon RN 102722 Made in the U.S.A." At opposite end of heading is word "Utah" and a "Colonial Flag" tag.

This flag was produced by local Utah company Colonial Flag after the historic passing of the Utah State Flag Concurrent Resolution in 2011.

The first state flag of Utah was made in 1903 and adopted as the official State flag design by the legislature in 1911. The flag’s design was based on the Utah state seal created by Harry E. Edwards and adopted by Utah’s legislature in 1896. Later flags, however, included inconsistencies that were perpetuated throughout the 20th century, unknowingly violating Utah’s original flag statute. The most obvious inconsistency was the inclusion of the year “1847” below the shield component instead of within it.

This flag was printed after the passage of the 2011 HCR with the corrections implemented. “1847” is printed on the white shield instead of below. Among the first 100 of its kind to be made, the flag was donated to the Historical Society by Ron Fox.
