Biographical Text

Like the centuries of ironworkers before him, Mark Schramm heats, pounds and shapes rods of iron, slowly transforming them into objects of usefulness and beauty. As a kid he liked drawing and building things and after coming to Utah became interested in horseshoeing and hot forge work. By reading books and learning from more experienced metalworkers, he mastered the basics and today works on his own and in shops that offer decorative work. Mark is also active in a local artisan group that organizes workshops where ancient blacksmithing skills are shared and passed along. Though he fabricates everything from fireplace tools to light fixtures and railings, he is known for his metal roses that are remarkably similar to roses made in Europe during the Middle Ages, attesting to the inherent properties of his medium.
