Biographical Text
After a boyhood of farming and tending livestock on the family homestead, M. J. Alldredge spent his youth working as a cowboy in Nevada and California. Using ropes, he braided from rawhide, and bits and spurs of his own design, he spent several years chasing cows over the mountains and deserts of other states before returning to Utah. Back home he took a job as a welder on the railroad where he worked heating and bending metal just like his father, the town blacksmith, had before him.
In later life these experiences come together in his welded scrap metal sculptures that depict scenes ranging from farm and ranch work or community activities to prospectors, Indians and gamblers. His miniatures both chronicle his life experiences and pay tribute to his rural surroundings and western heritage.
