Description
Woven rug with tan dark yellow main color and black decorative line design. In center is shape of the state of Utah in dark brown and within that a skep beehive is depicted in black and yellow tan. Inside brown shape of state it reads "State of Utah" in large white letters. "1979" in black outlined font in upper right of Utah shaped area. Gray top and bottom edges have tassle ties on each corner. Attached on top right corner is a white business card with black print that reads "Thin Bear Indian Arts Inc, Navajo - Ute- Zuni - Hopi Robert Hosler P.O. Box 625 Blanding Utah."
This handwoven Diné (Navajo) rug was donated to the Historical Society in 2009 by Norma Matheson, former first lady of Utah and a leader of the Utah Democratic Party. According to a business card attached to it, this rug was made by Ruth Maryboy for Thin Bear Indian Arts in Bluff, Utah.
Norma Matheson’s husband, Scott M. Matheson, was Utah’s 12th governor. In office from 1977-1984, Governor Matheson participated in the Intergovernmental Task Force on Water Policy and the Four Corners Regional Commission.
